Chris Bull is a strategy, operations and change consultant who has established himself as one of the leading advisors to legal businesses in the dynamic and innovative UK market as well as in the US and internationally.

Chris’s relationship with Edge International stretches back to 2011, when he first joined Edge and began his law firm consulting practice. He works not only as a consultant on strategically significant engagements, but also as a retained advisor, non-executive director, mentor, facilitator and conference producer and chair.

With a career that underlines his reputation as a legal market pioneer and innovator, his contribution to clients is neatly summarised under the banner of ‘bringing business best practice to the legal sector’.  Career headlines include having worked for all four of the Big Four accounting/consulting firms, being one of the first partner-level Chief Operating Officers at a law firm, overseeing some of the largest global Legal Process Outsourcing deals, advising on the launch of a series of high-profile Alternative Business Structure (ABS) externally funded legal businesses and creating multiple successful industry initiatives and events.

Chris has specialist skills in business strategy execution, operations, organisation design, sourcing, strategic technology and business transformation drawing on almost 25 years’ legal sector experience including:

  • Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive at Osborne Clarke.  Over a 12-year career as a Board member and executive leader at leading UK law firm Osborne Clarke, he was responsible for all business service functions and Deputy to the Managing Partner, as the firm grew from £12m to almost £100m turnover in just over 5 years;
  • Chief Operating Officer Europe & the Americas for pioneering Alternative Legal Service Provider (ALSP) Integreon;
  • Led the team of consultants, business analysts and technologists responsible for implementing the legal world’s largest legal outsourcing project to redesign and migrate to Integreon CMS Cameron McKenna’s business service organisation;
  • Led projects for multiple law firms on Organisation and Business Process Design, especially redesigning Business Services, for firms including Eversheds, Deloitte, Wragge & Co (now Gowling WLG), Hill Dickinson and LeClair Ryan;
  • Advised on a series of high-profile Alternative Business Structure (ABS) strategy and conversion projects, including for KPMG, DAS Law, Jordans Corporate Law and LegalZoom;
  • Strategy consultant to Managing Partners, Boards and Partnership groups at a succession of UK top 150 law firms;
  • Engaged as Legal Operations Architect in 2019 by Deloitte to develop the organisational, process and technology infrastructure for their flagship UK legal business.

One of the busiest speakers and writers on the business of law (with over 30 engagements during 2019 alone), Chris is in demand as a keynote presenter, producer, Chair and panelist at major conferences in Europe and the USA and is the author of a series of reports on legal business.  His presentation ‘The Age of Agile: how can mid-tier law firms compete?’ was developed in Spring 2019 and has been delivered to multiple audiences since then, providing a challenging, informed perspective on today’s legal market and the need for firms to become organisationally agile in order to compete and survive in the new decade.  Chris also debuted the in-depth strategic workshop for Boards and Executive teams, ‘The 2020s Challenge: the 20 Questions Law Firm Boards have to answer’ in 2019.  He has presented, chaired and designed multiple sessions and events around the strategic use of technology and innovation in legal and professional services.

In addition to his work at Edge International, Osborne Clarke, Integreon and UK consultancy Kingsmead Square, Chris has held roles at PriceWaterhouse, EY, NatWest Bank and served for 3 years as KPMG’s Ambassador for Professional Practices.  He has led a major change programme for The Law Society of England and Wales and is retained by leading international law firm network Lex Mundi to deliver content to over 100 leading law firms globally around topics such as Legal Operations, Legal Project Management and Analytics.

In 2018 Chris joined forces with two of the other leading lights of the UK’s legal innovation and technology world, Derek Southall (ex-Gowling WLG) and Peter Owen (ex-Eversheds) to create The Intuity Alliance, a unique alliance of cutting-edge LegalTech, Innovation and Digital Strategy capability.

Chris has served as a Non-Executive Director and Retained Advisor at a range of businesses.  He is currently Network Director for the Legal COO and CFO Networks and is the Co-Chair of one of the most active UK regional legaltech communities, Bristol+BathLegalTech. He co-created and produces the annual Alternative Tech & Innovation Leaders Summit, a unique gathering of innovation leaders from across the UK’s largest professional service firms; law, accounting, consulting and real estate.
