Daniel B Mahoney
Daniel B. Mahoney is the architect and former manager of the DuPont Company’s innovative and award-winning law firm partnering program. In 1997 he formed his legal services consulting firm, The Mahoney Consulting Group. The supply chain management model that Dan successfully utilized to design DuPont’s legal program has been adopted by leading law firms and corporate legal departments around the world. Dan maintains an active consulting practice advising corporations, law firms and legal services suppliers in both the U.S. and the U.K. The U.K. publication, Legal Business, in its millennial edition, selected Dan as one of the 10 people who most influenced the practice of law over the last decade.
Dan and his program were the subject of the feature article in the June, 1994 edition of Forbes ASAP. Additional articles about him and his program have appeared in numerous publications in the U.S. and the U.K., including the December, 1994 edition of The American Lawyer; the May, 1996 edition of International Commercial Litigation; the April, 1998 edition of Corporate Counsel; the May, 1998 edition of Commercial Lawyer; the July/August, 1998 edition of ACCA Docket; the November 13, 2000 edition of the Financial Times; and, the March 12, 2002 edition of The Times of London. In addition, Dan has been active on the legal writing and speaking circuits. He has published articles on the changing legal marketplace and legal services reengineering in the legal management magazine, Revolutionizing Litigation Management, the American Bar Association’s Business Law Today and Legal Week. In addition, Dan has been on the faculty or chaired numerous conferences on law firm and legal department management and has spoken at many ABA meetings. He was a key participant in the Presidential Showcase Program at the ABA’s annual meeting in 1995 and the ABA’s 70-city satellite seminar on novel fee arrangements in 1996.
The National Law Journal cited the program that Dan designed for DuPont as the reason DuPont’s Legal Department was selected as one of the five most respected legal departments in the U.S.
Dan has JD and MA degrees from the University of Virginia, where he is a member of the Business Advisory Council to the Law School faculty. He practiced law in New York City with the firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson. He left private practice to join DuPont and had a 20-year career in its legal department, including a four-year assignment in DuPont’s European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
